RUN X, the World Athletics Treadmill Championship: Dates, Rules and How to Qualify
RUN X is the first World Treadmill Championship, a 5K organised by Technogym and World Athletics that any runner aged 18 or over can enter from an affiliated gym. Qualifying opened on 23 October and runs until 24 January 2027. The finals take place on 20 and 21 March at Technogym Village in Cesena, Italy, with US$100,000 in prize money.
What RUN X is and who runs it
Races are held on connected Technogym treadmills that upload your time to a live global leaderboard. According to the World Athletics press release, qualifying starts in 400 gyms across 20 countries, and the ambassadors are France’s Jimmy Gressier and America’s Sara Hall.
The distance is always 5 km. You are ranked overall and in your age group, with separate categories by sex and nationality.
| Phase | Dates | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying | 23 October 2026 to 24 January 2027 | Any official centre |
| Regionals | 30 January to 28 February 2027 | Official centres, Skillrun treadmills only |
| World Finals | 20 and 21 March 2027 | Technogym Village, Cesena (Italy) |

RUN X qualifying dates
During RUN X qualifying you can run one certified race per day within the designated race periods, and your best time counts. World Athletics has set five Global RUN X Days: 24 October, 14 November and 12 December 2026, and 16 and 23 January 2027. Each gym can also hold its own local race days.
Three Technogym models count for qualifying: Excite Run, Artis Run and Skillrun. Regionals can only be run on a Skillrun.
How to enter RUN X and what it costs
Entry is free. You sign up at runx.org, in the centre’s app or on the console of a compatible treadmill, and create a runner ID, one per person. You give your passport country, date of birth and sex at registration, and those details cannot be changed during the competition.
The championship has no entry fee, though the gym may charge its usual access rate. If you own a compatible treadmill at home, you can log workouts on the Open Leaderboard, but races that count for the championship must be run at an official centre.
Under the official rules, you tap the RUN X icon on the screen, scan a QR code with the Technogym app, choose your starting pace, and the treadmill sets itself to that speed. Medical clearance is your responsibility: bring a certificate to the centre if local law requires one, because Technogym and World Athletics do not check them.

What the rules ban
Anything that alters your time leads to disqualification. You cannot hold the handrails or lean on the screen, step off the belt onto the side rails, or set a negative incline. Taking turns with other runners relay style is also banned. You have to log in with your ID before you start, or the result does not count.
As in any World Athletics event, its anti-doping rules apply, overseen by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

Age groups, regionals and prize money
The age groups are 18-23, 24-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, 66-75 and over 75, based on your age on 31 December of the competition year. The top 25 % of each age group, sex and country move on to the regionals. A country only gets a representative in a category if at least four of its runners have posted a valid time in it.
Ten men and ten women reach the overall final: the best time from each of the six World Athletics continental areas, the next three best times worldwide and the best from the host country. The US$100,000 is split equally by sex, US$50,000 each, and only among the overall finalists, whose flights and accommodation are covered.
According to World Athletics, the federations of the two champions also receive a wild card for the 5K at the 2027 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Yangzhou, China, held the weekend after the final.
How to prepare for the RUN X 5K
If you have never run hard on a treadmill, try it in a workout first. Without wind or bends, pace feels different. Our guide to treadmill running explains how to adapt your sessions.
Treadmills show speed, so it helps to have the conversion ready:
| 5K time | Pace per km | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 17:00 | 3:24 | 17.6 km/h |
| 20:00 | 4:00 | 15.0 km/h |
| 22:30 | 4:30 | 13.3 km/h |
| 25:00 | 5:00 | 12.0 km/h |
| 30:00 | 6:00 | 10.0 km/h |
| 35:00 | 7:00 | 8.6 km/h |
To pick a target, the race time predictor estimates it from another recent race, and the 5K training plan covers the weeks of preparation. With five global days before the end of January, the first one gives you a benchmark to improve on in the next.
