Nike Pegasus 42 Review: Features, Specs and Verdict
The Nike Pegasus 42 is the latest version of Nike’s longest-running daily trainer, the shoe that has been the “one pair for everything” for many runners for decades. This generation improves traction and upper fit, keeps a moderate stack and a high drop, and is still built to last. Its weak point is weight, which makes it less agile than many rivals at its price.
This review is based on official Nike data and on published lab tests and reviews, such as RunRepeat, not on our own testing. The rating on the card, 8.0 out of 10, is an approximate score based on those reviews.
What’s new in the Nike Pegasus 42
Compared with the Pegasus 41, the 42 has a slightly roomier, more comfortable upper, better grip and an outsole that is still very durable. Nike keeps its official 10 mm drop and a moderate stack instead of moving to the tall profiles that are now in fashion. The price goes up slightly from the previous version.

Differences between official and measured figures are normal: brands usually give the weight of a specific size and measure drop differently. If you want to understand what they mean, I explain it in the guide on drop, cushioning and carbon plate.

Midsole and ride
The midsole gives a stable, ground-connected ride that is very comfortable for heel strikers. In lab testing the forefoot measured quite a bit thinner than Nike states, which means a higher real drop and limited cushioning up front. It doesn’t use a supercritical foam, so its response is fine but not especially lively.
Upper and fit
The upper is soft, breathable and a bit roomier than the previous version, with good build quality. It holds the foot well and is comfortable for everyday wear too, outside of training.
To get the size right, follow the steps in the guide on running shoe size.
Outsole and durability
The outsole rubber is one of its strengths: good traction and proven durability, ideal for piling up kilometers on the road.

Who is the Nike Pegasus 42 for?
Neutral heel strikers looking for one reliable pair for two or three runs a week, and Pegasus regulars who want a safe upgrade.
Who it isn’t for: if weight matters to you or you want a bouncy shoe for faster paces, there are lighter, more responsive options in its price range.
