HOKA Clifton 10 Review: Features, Specs and Verdict

The HOKA Clifton 10 is the tenth version of one of the brand’s most popular shoes, known for combining lots of cushioning with low weight. This generation gains stack height and protection, and a roomier toe box, in exchange for some weight. It is a very comfortable shoe for easy runs and long runs.

This review is based on official HOKA data and on published lab tests and reviews, such as RunRepeat, not on our own testing. The rating on the card, 8.6 out of 10, is an approximate score based on those reviews.

What’s new in the HOKA Clifton 10

Compared with the Clifton 9, the 10 raises the midsole height and protects your joints more, to the point that it feels more like a Bondi than a classic Clifton. The toe box is wider, giving your toes more room, and traction improves. In exchange, it gains weight and still uses a conventional EVA foam.

Differences between official and measured figures are normal: brands usually give the weight of a specific size and measure drop differently. If you want to understand what they mean, I explain it in the guide on drop, cushioning and carbon plate.

HOKA Clifton 10 in three-quarter view

Midsole and ride

The midsole is tall and protective, with a stable ride despite its height and well suited to heel strikers. Its foam is a conventional EVA, without the energy of supercritical foams, so it feels cushioned rather than fast.

Upper and fit

The upper is comfortable, with a wider toe box than the previous version and a heel collar that looks after the Achilles area. The tongue isn’t gusseted, which not everyone likes.

To get the size right, follow the steps in the guide on running shoe size.

Outsole and durability

HOKA has improved traction over the previous version, with an outsole designed for the road and daily use.

Who is the HOKA Clifton 10 for?

Runners who found the Clifton 9 undercushioned, those looking for a protective shoe for easy and long runs, and those who also want it for walking.

Who it isn’t for: if you want a light, responsive shoe for faster paces, its conventional foam and extra weight make it less suitable.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great joint protection
  • Wider toe box
  • Stable despite its height
  • Ideal for long runs

Cons:

  • Conventional EVA foam
  • Heavier than the Clifton 9
  • Non-gusseted tongue

Alternatives

If you are unsure, compare it with other shoes reviewed on KnowPace: Brooks Ghost 18, ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28, Nike Pegasus 42. You can put them head to head in the shoe comparison or see them all in the shoes section.

Final verdict

The Clifton 10 is a very protective, comfortable shoe for piling up easy kilometers. It loses some of the lightness that made it famous, but gains cushioning. Before you decide, the guides on drop, cushioning and carbon plate may help. Choose well, run better.
