Barcelona Marathon start waves and pacers

The start is organised in colour-coded waves, and you can only enter the one that matches your bib colour. Your wave is assigned from the time you declare when registering, and you can change it until 1 February 2027 by providing proof of your time. According to the official website, starts are staggered by pace to avoid crowding.

There are 35 pacers covering seven paces: 2:45, 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00 and 4:30. If your goal matches one of them, they can help you pace, but do not glue yourself to them at the start or at aid stations, where bottlenecks form.

Bib, chip and runners’ expo

  • Bibs and chips are collected in person at the Expo Sports on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before. Bibs are not handed out on race day.
  • Someone else can collect it for you with your confirmation and a copy of your ID.
  • The chip is single use, goes on your shoe and must be returned at the finish; if you do not return it, there is a 5-euro penalty.
  • Fill in the back of your bib with your details, an emergency phone number and your medical information.

The checklist is in the guide to what to bring to a race.

Barcelona Marathon aid stations

The rules provide drinks stations roughly every 2.5 kilometres from kilometre 5: at 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, 32.5, 35, 37.5 and 40, plus drinks and food at the finish. As the rules do not mention gels on course, carry your own and try them in training first. I explain how many in the guide to running gels.

Barcelona Marathon strategy

The organisers describe the course as urban, flat and fast. Even so, in a marathon what costs you most is starting too fast:

  • Carb load in the days before; I explain it in the guide to carb loading.
  • Start 5 to 10 seconds per kilometre slower than your goal pace for the first few kilometres; the strategy is in the guide to the negative split.
  • Take carbs from the start, every 20 to 30 minutes, to avoid hitting the wall.
  • If your goal is to break four hours, there are paces and sessions in the guide to the sub-4 marathon.

If you need more preparation, there is the week-by-week marathon training plan.
