Barcelona Half Marathon: Guide to Date, Start Waves, Pacers and Strategy

If you are going to run it, this guide covers what the official rules say, how the start waves and pacers work, where the aid stations are and a strategy for running your best race. The entry fee and availability are also on the Barcelona Half Marathon race page.

Registration and changes
- The price rises in bands: 36 euros for the first 1,000 bibs, 40 up to 10,000 and 50 up to 40,000.
- You can transfer your bib through the official process; you get back what you paid minus a 16.95-euro fee once the new runner completes registration.
- If you buy the refund guarantee when registering, you can request a refund until 18 January 2027.

Barcelona Half Marathon start waves and pacers
The start is organised in colour-coded waves based on the time you declare when registering, and you can only enter the one matching your bib colour. You can change wave until 30 November 2026 by providing proof of your time. According to the official website, starts are staggered by pace.
There are 30 pacers covering ten paces: 1:20, 1:25, 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55, 2:00 and 2:05. If you want to break two hours, there are paces and sessions in the guide to the sub-2 half marathon.
Bib, chip and runners’ expo
- Bibs and chips are collected in person at the Expo Sports on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before. They are not handed out on race day.
- Someone else can collect it for you with your confirmation and a copy of your ID.
- The chip goes on your shoe and must be returned at the finish; if not, there is a 5-euro penalty. Only runners wearing the organisers’ chip appear in the results.
- Fill in the back of your bib with your details and an emergency phone number.

Aid stations
The rules provide drinks stations at roughly kilometres 5, 10, 15 and 17.5, plus drinks and food at the finish. If you will take more than an hour and a half, carry one or two gels; I explain it in the guide to running gels.

Barcelona Half Marathon strategy
- Stick to your wave and do not waste energy overtaking in the first kilometre.
- Start a few seconds per kilometre slower than your goal pace and settle into it from kilometre 4 or 5. The strategy is in the guide to the negative split.
- If you run with a pacer, stay a few metres behind to avoid bottlenecks at aid stations.
- In February it can be chilly early on: wear a layer you can drop at the start.
If you need more preparation, there is the half marathon training plan, and if it is your first time, the guide to your first half marathon.
