HOKA Arahi 9 Review: Features, Specs and Verdict
The HOKA Arahi 9 is HOKA’s moderate stability shoe for daily training. It keeps the H-Frame from the Arahi 8, a frame in the midsole that centers the foot without a wedge, and adds a tougher outsole rubber. BIKILA sells it for €159.95.
This review brings together the official description published by BIKILA, the lab measurements from RunRepeat and the test by Doctors of Running. We have not tested it. The score on this page, 7.9 out of 10, is RunRepeat’s.
What is new in the HOKA Arahi 9
According to Doctors of Running, version 9 refines the 8 rather than changing it. The updates are an upper with more room in the forefoot and a more abrasion resistant outsole rubber. RunRepeat adds that it is heavier than the Arahi 8.

Midsole and ride
RunRepeat measured two foam layers with very different firmness: a soft lower layer, 32.9 on its scale, and a much firmer top layer. Heel shock absorption came in at 138, above its database average of 131. Energy return is the weak point: the lab calls it very poor. In the cold, the foam got 23% firmer.
Doctors of Running found it firm and stiff at first, with a forefoot that only gains a little flex after about 20 miles. The transition felt more natural walking and on easy runs than at faster paces. What they liked most is the midfoot, where the H-Frame centers the stride without feeling intrusive.

HOKA Arahi 9 upper and fit
The mesh upper has some stretch and leaves more room in the forefoot than the previous version, although the toe box tapers quickly on the inner side. Doctors of Running recommends it for normal to narrow feet; RunRepeat says it fits true to size and that HOKA makes it in three widths (D, 2E and 4E), with fewer colors in the wider ones. The tongue is not gusseted: RunRepeat criticizes that, and Doctors of Running noticed it sometimes slides.
Outsole and durability
The new rubber is the highlight of the Arahi 9. RunRepeat calls the outsole durability excellent and gives it 3 out of 5 for toe box wear and 4 out of 5 for heel padding. Wet grip also improves.

Who is the HOKA Arahi 9 for?
Runners with mild to moderate pronation who want a stable, durable shoe for easy runs, and people who mix running and walking. RunRepeat recommends it for heel strikers. It is not for fast running: with little bounce and 278 g, it is hard to pick up the pace. If your pronation is severe, RunRepeat suggests a shoe with more support.
Pros and cons
Pros: stability without too much stiffness, a very durable outsole, good wet grip and three widths.
Cons: low energy return, more weight than the Arahi 8, a slightly narrow toe box and a tongue that moves.

HOKA Arahi 9 alternatives
The ASICS GT-2000 15 is lighter and bouncier; RunRepeat suggests it for runners who care about energy return. If you need more hold, look at the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33. All five are compared in our guide to running shoes for overpronation.
