Mark Kiptoo Breaks the M50 Marathon World Record with 2:15:24 in Frankfurt

Kenya’s Mark Kosgei Kiptoo broke the M50 marathon world record in Frankfurt on Sunday, finishing in 2:15:24 at 50 years and four months old, 13th among the men. The previous best for the age group was the 2:19:29 run by South Africa’s Titus Mamabolo in July 1991. Kiptoo took 4 minutes and 5 seconds off it, although World Masters Athletics (WMA), the body that ratifies masters records, still has to approve the mark.

The official results of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon, held on 25 October, give Kiptoo the same gun and chip time: 2:15:24. Wearing bib 24, he won the M50 category by almost 14 minutes over Portugal’s Nuno Rocha (2:29:01). According to the organisers’ press release, much of the race was run in wet and windy conditions.

Up front, Ethiopia’s Jirata Dinki won in 2:05:26, 9 minutes and 58 seconds ahead of Kiptoo. Our Frankfurt Marathon 2026 report covers that race and Blanka Dörfel’s 2:20:46 debut.

Kiptoo knows the course well. The first marathon on his World Athletics profile is Frankfurt 2013, in 2:06:16, and he came back in 2014 (2:06:49), 2018 (2:07:50) and 2019 (2:08:09). His personal best, 2:06:00, dates from Eindhoven in 2015.

An M50 marathon world record that stood since 1991

The WMA road records list, in its December 2025 version, gives the M50 marathon world record as Mamabolo’s 2:19:29, set in Durban on 20 July 1991 when he was 50. Among the age groups from 35 to 65, only Piet van Alphen’s M55 mark (2:25:56, Rotterdam 1986) is older.

To be eligible for the M50 marathon world record, a runner has to be between 50 and 54 on race day. Kiptoo was born on 21 June 1976, so he had been in the category for only four months.

Under article 32 of its competition rules, WMA keeps road world records only for the marathon and for race walking (10, 20 and 50 km). There are no official masters records for the half marathon or the 10K.

When the record becomes official

The WMA rules, updated in October 2026, state that no performance counts as a world record until WMA ratifies it. The steps are:

  • An application on the official form goes to the regional association’s records officer, who forwards it to WMA.
  • It must include a copy of the athlete’s birth certificate (or an official document issued at birth) and the complete results of the race.
  • The athlete must not have a doping violation from a test collected at that competition.
  • The regional officer has 30 days to approve or reject it, and once ratified the official list is updated on the WMA website within another 30 days.

Until then, the 2:15:24 is an M50 marathon world record pending ratification.

What the WMA list says about his M45 years

Before this M50 marathon world record, Kiptoo had already run under the M45 mark on the list. The same December 2025 table gives the M45 record (ages 45 to 49) as the 2:14:23 run by Bernard Lagat of the United States in Atlanta on 29 February 2020. At that age Kiptoo went faster several times, according to World Athletics: 2:09:12 in Zurich in April 2023, aged 46; 2:09:10 in Seoul in March 2024, aged 47; and 2:09:16 in Zurich again in April 2025, aged 48. In May this year, at 49, he was fifth in Geneva in 2:12:21.

None of those times appear on the list. The rules require the formal application and its documents, and without it a performance does not go on the list however fast it is. WMA has not published any explanation for these cases.

From 12:53 for 5000 m to masters marathoner

Before the roads, Kiptoo was a top track runner. His World Athletics profile lists 12:53.46 for 5000 m, winning the Stockholm Diamond League meeting in August 2010, and 26:54.64 for 10,000 m in Eugene in 2011. He was African 5000 m champion in Porto Novo in 2012 and won bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

He also has a history in Spain. His half marathon best, 1:00:29, came at Azkoitia-Azpeitia in 2011, and in March this year, aged 49, he won the same Basque race in 1:03:17. In 2022 he ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Marathon in 2:11:15.

What the M50 marathon world record means for everyday runners

Between his best marathon (2:06:00 at 39) and the M50 marathon world record in Frankfurt there are 9 minutes and 24 seconds, 7.5% slower in eleven years. If you took up running after 40, that number gives some context for how times drop with age, although Kiptoo has raced at elite level for more than twenty years (World Athletics has results for him from 2004) and his case is far from an amateur’s.

To see what marathon time your 10K or half marathon result points to, the race time predictor does the conversion. And if you ran a marathon this autumn, our marathon recovery guide covers when to start training again.

Mamabolo’s record lasted 35 years. If ratified, the new M50 marathon world record lowers the category best by more than four minutes, and Kiptoo has almost five years left in M50 to improve it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the M50 category in athletics?

It is the masters category for men aged 50 to 54. WMA uses five-year age groups from 35 upwards, and the age that counts is the athlete’s age on race day.

What was the M50 marathon world record before Kiptoo?

Titus Mamabolo’s 2:19:29, run in Durban on 20 July 1991, according to the WMA road records list.

Is Kiptoo’s M50 marathon world record official yet?

Not yet. An application has to reach WMA with his birth certificate and the full results, and it is not a record until WMA ratifies it and updates its list.

Is there an official M50 half marathon world record?

No. On the road, WMA only ratifies records for the marathon and the 10, 20 and 50 km race walks.
