Runner on a misty mountain trail, guide to the best trail running shoes

Best Trail Running Shoes 2026: 6 Models Compared by Lugs, Weight and Price

The best trail running shoes for most runners are the ones that match the ground you run on: mud and rock, fire roads, or ultras that last many hours. In this guide we compare six models sold by BIKILA in November 2026, from the Saucony Peregrine 16 to the La Sportiva Prodigio Max, using each brand’s data and RunRepeat’s lab measurements. Three of these best trail running shoes cost €109.95.

How to choose the best trail running shoes

To choose between the best trail running shoes, start with lug depth. With 5 mm or more, a shoe grips in mud, wet grass and loose dirt; with 3 or 4 mm it works better on fire roads and hardpack and feels less awkward on road sections. Then look at stack height: above 35 mm at the heel gives more protection on long runs, but your foot sits higher and the shoe is less stable on rock.

Drop matters too. If you come from road shoes with 8 or 10 mm, a 4 mm shoe will load your calves more for the first few weeks. We explain it in drop, cushioning and carbon plate, and the technical side (lugs, protection, grip) is in our guide to trail running shoes.

It gets a new supercritical foam, a Vibram Megagrip outsole with 4.5 mm lugs and 2.2 mm of rubber that protects without a rock plate. It weighs 281 grams and RunRepeat gives it 8.5. La Sportiva Prodigio Max

It is the heaviest (306 grams) and the stiffest in torsion: 20.3 Nm with no carbon plate, against 12 Nm for the Peregrine 16. That stiffness gives plenty of stability when your foot lands on an angled rock. Its 5.5 mm lugs are the deepest in this guide. It suits slow ultras and long mountain days, less so if you want a nimble shoe. RunRepeat gives it 8.4.

Best trail running shoes: frequently asked questions

What are the best trail running shoes for beginners?

An all-round shoe with 3.5 to 4.5 mm lugs and a drop similar to your road shoes. From this guide, the Trabuco 14 (6.3 mm drop) or the Agravic 4 (9.1 mm), both at €109.95.

How deep should the lugs be?

For mud, wet grass and loose dirt, 5 mm or more. For fire roads and hardpack, 3 or 4 mm is enough and feels better on tarmac.

Can you use trail running shoes on the road?

For short sections, yes. Low-lug models such as the Agravic 4 handle it better. On long road runs the lugs wear faster and the ride is less comfortable than in a road shoe.

How many kilometres do trail running shoes last?

Brands do not publish it. It depends on terrain, runner weight and rubber: the Speedgoat 7 has the thickest outsole in this guide (2.2 mm). The signs that it is time to replace them are in when to replace running shoes.
