Carbon Plate Running Shoes 2026: 9 Models Compared

Carbon plate running shoes are what most runners now race in for marathons, halves and 10Ks: a very reactive foam, a stiff carbon piece and close to 40 mm of sole under the heel. This guide compares nine models sold by BIKILA in November 2026, from the Joma R3000 to the Nike Alphafly 4, using each brand’s data and RunRepeat’s lab measurements. It also sums up a study published on 2 November that measured how much they load the Achilles tendon.

What to check before buying carbon plate running shoes

How the plate works and what it does is covered in drop, cushioning and carbon plate. When buying, look at the heel stack on the spec sheet. World Athletics allows a maximum of 40 mm on the road and a single rigid structure, and almost every model in this guide sits between 34 and 40 mm. Also check what carbon they use, because not all of them have a full plate: the Adios Pro 4 uses rods (EnergyRods) and the Adios Pro 5 a rim that wraps around the midsole (EnergyRim).

Carbon plate running shoes are for racing and some workouts. The upper is very thin and wears out sooner than on a trainer: in RunRepeat’s wear test, the toebox of the Metaspeed Edge Tokyo and of the Endorphin Pro 5 scored 1 out of 5. If you are torn between a daily trainer and a racer, see training vs racing shoes.

What studies say about carbon plate running shoes

A meta-analysis in the International Journal of Sports Medicine, published in February 2026, pooled 17 crossover trials with 281 participants. In this kind of shoe, oxygen uptake was lower and time trials were faster than in conventional shoes. The effect was small to moderate (g = -0.44 for oxygen uptake and -0.23 for time trials).

The average hides large differences between runners. In a 2023 study in Sports Medicine with seven world-class Kenyans and seven European amateurs, the Kenyans’ running economy in advanced shoes ranged from 11.3% worse to 11.4% better than in a classic racing flat. The Europeans went from 9.7% better to 1.1% worse. Two of the authors work for adidas. With that spread, it pays to try the shoes in fast sessions before racing an important event in them.

Carbon plates and the Achilles tendon

On 2 November 2026, the journal The Foot published a study from Niigata University of Health and Welfare (Japan) with 19 healthy men who landed on their heels. They ran at the same speed in a neutral shoe, a rocker-soled shoe and an advanced footwear technology shoe with a plate. The plated shoe did not change Achilles tendon force compared with the neutral one, while the rocker shoe reduced it, along with the push against the ground. Only the abstract is out, it does not name the models, and the runners were healthy, so it says nothing about an injured tendon. If that is your case, start with our guide to Achilles tendinitis.

Carbon plate running shoes FAQ

Are they worth it for amateur runners?

Studies find lower energy cost and faster times on average, although the gain varies a lot between runners: in the 2023 study, the European amateurs went from 9.7% better to 1.1% worse. They make more sense for a race with a time goal than for daily runs.

Which one is the most stable?

Of the carbon plate running shoes in this guide, the Saucony Endorphin Pro 5, according to RunRepeat. Among the lightest, the Metaspeed Edge Tokyo is more stable than the Sky Tokyo.

How many kilometres do they last?

Brands do not publish it, and labs measure wear, not kilometres. The Rocket X 3 did best in RunRepeat’s test. The signs that it is time to replace them are in when to replace running shoes.

Can you train in carbon plate running shoes?

For intervals, tempo runs and the odd long run at marathon pace, yes. RunRepeat names the Endorphin Pro 5 as a shoe for training as well as racing. For easy runs, a trainer is a better choice.
